Types of Reels |
The main types of reel you'll find will be either fixed spool, centre pin or multiplier reels, these differ mainly due to the rotation of the drum or not, fixed spool reels as you would imagine have a fixed spool and the bail arm is used to wind the line onto the drum. The multiplier reel and the centre pin reel uses a different mechanism where the drum itself rotate to wind the line on and off.
Each type or reel has its own benefits and sometimes one is more useful than another depending on the scenario the angler finds themselves in however personal choice can lead to a decision in one direction or the other.
Suffice to say that the multiplier reel is not to be used by beginners to the sport of fishing

Fixed Spool Reels |
The fixed spool reel is by far the most common reel used in fishing today. This style of reel itself is simple to master and due to its design reduces the chances of tangles while fishing.
The reel is attached to the rod via the reel plate and line is released from the drum by "opening the bail arm", the newer reels today will have a reverse gear to allow the reel to be use in a backwind scenario, some anglers enjoy playing fish using the backwind principle while others use the "drag setting".
Drag is a term used to describe the tensioning of the reel spool when its put under direct pressure from a fighting fish, the drag is set such that a lunging fight will cause the reel to release line to avoid hook pulls and lost fish.

Multiplier Reels |
The multiplier reel is probably designed more on the basis of the original reels record back in the 1651. The principle of these reels is that the line is wound onto the spool in a horizontal fashion rather than the fixed spool reel that has its spool mounted vertically.
The fixed spool reel is a favorite of the boat angler and the surf caster alike due to its casing ability, this reel in the right hands can cast a lead and rig well over 300m.
The multiplier design is used for both deep sea fishing and shore lure fishing with the main differences being the gear ratio's used in the make up of the reels.
Deep sea reels would have a high retrieve ratio due to the depths being fished at the need to get line onto the reel evenly and fast, the small brother of the multiplier that might be used while pike fishing from a boat is design to allow the angler to cast a bait quickly and retrieve at different rate's

Centre Pin Reels |
This is wonderful way to fish using the centre pin reel on rivers while trotting a float for chub. The centre pin reel is a real classic and usually only used by the more traditional angler. one might see a Chris Yates style character fishing in a fast running swim with a split cane rod and bread flake as a hook bait..... ok that may be a little over the top but you get the idea.
This style of fishing is a very direct contact style of fishing as the clutching of the reel is managed by the angle hold the spool as line is deployed. Really a great way to fish and very exciting also.
The centre pin reel is also the main stay reel of the fly angler with a capacity for a heavier line and gearing that allows line to be stripped from the reel for casting flys.
